Shalva Nikvashvili
1. June 2024 – 25. August 2024
Curated by Janika Jähnisch & Erik Swars

With Tza, Georgian artist Shalva Nikvashvili inaugurated the art association’s spaces on 1 June 2024. The starting point of Nikvashvili’s work is often subjective experiences of otherness as a queer, migrant person in conservative environments. His practice repeatedly provokes the grotesque and confronts viewers with discomfort, pushing the boundaries of perception and experience.

The lower dome hall is conceived as a life-size diorama accompanied by video works, a series of collaged photographs, and sculptures. The works frequently depict strange hybrid beings that combine female and male sexual characteristics, and at times even animal traits, thereby challenging stereotypical representations of bodies. Although the characters are shown with explicit sexual features, they are not presented in a sexualised context. In doing so, they are freed from male, heteronormative perspectives as well as from shame and taboo, becoming expressions of empowerment and liberation.
