Paul Kolling
1. March 2025 – 24. May 2025
Curated by Janika Jähnisch

In the solo exhibition Merit, Paul Kolling (*1993, Karlsruhe; lives and works in Berlin) addresses the infrastructural field of the energy sector and its entanglements with financial markets and politics. The title refers to the “merit order principle,” an auction-based pricing mechanism in the liberalised electricity market that is considered efficient but tends to reinforce profit-driven logics and deepen social inequalities.

Kolling’s research-based practice combines installation, sound, and video, examining the distribution of electricity as a resource, a driver of modern production, and a form of basic infrastructure situated between profit systems and social realities. Historical and contemporary perspectives are interwoven, ranging from the role of electricity during industrialisation to current energy policy developments shaped by tensions between progress optimism and critique.

With a site-specific reference to Leipzig and the European Energy Exchange (EEX), Kolling translates its structures into fragmented forms within the exhibition space. In doing so, the exhibition reveals opaque and speculative market mechanisms and makes the hidden stratifications of energy policy processes visible.
